If I'm physically connected to the network then logout and back in it will update my cached credentials. The problem comes with the fact that I don't want to climb under my desk to find the correct ethernet cable to plug into my laptop.

Thanks for the link. Now I just have to convince my Mac users to learn how to setup accounts. What I mean is that I originally tried to make my Mac users have their own accounts, instead of logging in as the "Admin" account.
They complained though that there were a lot of settings that they didn't know how to replicate, so they just wanted to rename the accounts to the new employee's name. I didn't fight it much because administratively I wasn't getting anything from AD integration anyhoo. Peter's got the answer.
Here's a how-to I wrote awhile ago. Just make sure to login as "other" or set the login options to require username and password. Macs do "just work". I'm betting Bret's example was user error as well. But like any technology you have to use it correctly.

An end user shouldn't be adding any system to a network, ever. That's what admins are for, to make sure it gets done correctly. If you drove your car into a wall because you didn't learn how to apply the break correctly is it the cars fault or yours? Active Directory Introduction.

I tried likewise. The community edition doesn't do anything more than the Directory Utility. To get workstation policy settings you have to buy the enterprise edition. Thank you for this post. It works fine for other network users who have never logged into the Mac a new "mobile" local account is created and they are able to login both on the AD network and off. Does anyone know of a way to remove the user "user profile" I created so i can log in again and create the local "mobile" user account? A user password is required to create a FileVault home.
